Renowned British actor Terence Stamp, one of the most prominent figures in cinema, has died at the age of 87, his family announced in a statement quoted by "The Independent".
Stamp became famous for his portrayal of General Zod, the supervillain in the classic Superman films, but his career spanned over 60 films, also leaving his mark with roles in successful productions such as The Limey and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come," the actor's family said in its announcement.
Oscar-nominated Stamp was born in London's East End in 1938, the son of a tugboat worker. He survived bombing during World War II and, immediately after leaving school, began a career in advertising, before entering the world of acting, where he would build one of the most celebrated careers in British and world cinema.
