The European Union and its closest allies are taking extraordinary measures to avoid another diplomatic clash between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky during the Ukrainian president's visit to Washington, which is expected to take place tomorrow.
After tense scenes at the White House in February – when Trump urged Zelensky to “make a deal with Russia or we’re out” and accused him of “gambling with World War III” – European leaders are stepping in to ensure broader and more consistent representation in the negotiations.
According to diplomatic sources, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Finnish President Alexander Stubb are expected to accompany Zelensky to the meeting with Trump.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed his attendance, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced this morning that he will also be present at the White House.
This European mobilization comes as an attempt to avoid a repeat of the recent incident, where Zelensky left the White House early after a strong confrontation with Trump, during a reception organized by Vice President JD Vance, known for his skeptical stance on aid to Ukraine.
With tensions remaining high over the future of American support for Kiev, the presence of European leaders is intended to send a clear message of unity and support for Ukraine - but also to calm the tone during sensitive political meetings expected to take place tomorrow in Washington.
