After closed-door talks and a family photo with European leaders, US President Donald Trump has made another strong statement.
He confirmed that he has gathered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and key European leaders around a table to discuss peace in Ukraine.
The US president stressed that in an important step, Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine.
This is one of the key points that the leaders will consider at the meeting. He says they will consider who will do what, essentially.
Trump says he is optimistic that the group can reach an agreement that will deter future aggression against Ukraine.
"I think the European nations are going to take on a lot of the burden. We're going to help them," Trump said.
“We have to talk about territories. It’s sad, but we have to negotiate,” Trump said. He said he had scheduled a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding: “I believe we can save lives. They’re killing 6,000 people a week. I’m working for a long-term peace — which so far hasn’t happened.”
Trump said there was no ceasefire, but he is not sure if it is necessary at this stage. He remains optimistic about an imminent diplomatic solution.
