New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has strongly condemned the military attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing them as a dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
His reaction came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that the US and Israel had carried out military strikes on Iranian territory. In a post on the social network X, Mamdani described the operation as “a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression.”
“Cities are being bombed, civilians are being killed, and a new war front is being opened. Americans don’t want this. They don’t want another war for regime change. They want peace and a solution to the cost of living crisis,” he wrote.
Mamdani's stance was stronger than that of many other Democratic politicians in New York, who have largely criticized the president for not seeking congressional approval before military intervention.
His statements have sparked strong political reactions. Harsh criticism came from conservative figures, who accused the mayor of taking a pro-Iran stance. Former New York Mayor Eric Adams responded by saying that protests against the attacks were coming from “political fanatics on the far left and right,” while Republican Senator Ted Cruz called Mamdani an “America-hating communist.”
On the other hand, left-wing organizations such as the Democratic Socialists of America supported his position, stating that Americans need solutions to the economic crisis and not a new war.
Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York and one of the youngest in the city's history, also recalled the experience of the Iraq war, warning of the consequences that a new, protracted conflict in the region could have.
Meanwhile, authorities in New York have increased security measures in several sensitive areas of the city following the attacks on Iran, although so far there is no information about concrete threats. Special anti-terrorism units have been deployed at several strategic points in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
