The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has expressed the European Union's "full solidarity" with Spain following threats from US President Donald Trump.
Costa announced that he had a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to express the EU's support.
"I just had a phone call with Pedro Sanchez to express the EU's full solidarity with Spain," Costa wrote on the social network X.
He stressed that the European Union will always ensure the protection of the interests of member states and reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to respecting international law and the rules-based global order.
Brussels' reaction comes after Trump threatened to cut off all trade relations with Spain after Madrid refused to allow the use of US military bases for missions related to attacks on Iran.
