US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States is investigating Saturday's attack on a girls' school in Iran, which reportedly killed more than 160 people.
Asked by reporters about the incident, Hegseth said that Washington is not targeting civilian targets and that the case is being verified.
"All I can say is that we are investigating this matter. We certainly do not target civilian targets, but we are reviewing and investigating what happened," he said.
In another statement, Hegseth said the US is aware of reports of an Iranian missile being intercepted in the eastern Mediterranean before it entered Turkish airspace.
However, according to him, the incident does not appear to be likely to activate NATO's Article 5 for collective defense.
The US Secretary of Defense also added that the person suspected of being behind a plot to assassinate Donald Trump has been killed.
