Britain should rejoin the European Union, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan. He joined calls for Britain to abandon Brexit and fully rebuild ties with the European bloc.
"I see every day the damage that Brexit has caused not only to London, but also to Londoners, the economic, social and cultural damage. I am quite clear about what needs to happen, which is that we need to join the European Union," he said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
He proposed a five-step return to the European bloc, with a restoration of relations with Brussels already achieved by Keir Starmer's government, then a closer rapprochement, followed by joining the Customs Union, then the Common Market, both in this Parliament.
"Then we, as the Labor Party, must contest the next general election with a clear manifesto commitment, a vote for Labor means we will rejoin the European Union," he added.
The London mayor stressed that the economic damage from Brexit was "tremendous", while adding that new research from the National Institute for Economic and Social Research and Goldman Sachs confirmed that the UK economy would have grown by an additional 10 percent if it had not been outside the EU.
The mayor of London argued that reunification with the EU would provide the "biggest" single boost to tackling the UK's cost of living crisis.
