Kosovo authorities found human remains on Friday, suspected to belong to a person who went missing during the 1998-1999 Kosovo war, during excavations at a site in Rahovec.
The Government Commission for Missing Persons said that during research excavations in Pržina, Rahovec, on Friday afternoon, mortal remains belonging to an individual were found and exhumed.
This is the third day in a row of ongoing excavations in this area, about 60 kilometers from the capital Pristina.
During the ongoing excavations over the past three days, authorities have found a total of two human remains, as well as two bone fragments, the commission said on Facebook.
They have been sent for examination.
"The exhumed mortal remains, which potentially belong to war victims who are still on the List of Missing Persons, have been sent for examination to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, in accordance with legal procedures and forensic standards," the announcement states.
Recently, authorities have continuously conducted excavations at various locations, where mortal remains suspected of belonging to persons missing during the recent war in Kosovo have been found.
During the 1998/99 war, around 13,000 people were killed, while over 1,500 remain missing.
Most of those killed were Albanian civilians.
Kosovo and Serbia reached agreement in 2023 on the Joint Declaration on Missing Persons, within the framework of the dialogue for the normalization of relations mediated by the European Union.
Among the commitments made were: full access to confidential information, including that with classified status; making available all documents relevant to determining the fate of missing persons, as well as joint work through a commission chaired by the European Union.
