"The death penalty is a sanction that is both inhuman and degrading. France supports its universal abolition," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux.
France has described the death penalty as "inhumane and degrading" after the Israeli parliament approved a law allowing the death penalty, but only for Palestinian prisoners.
"The death penalty is a sanction that is both inhuman and degrading. France supports its universal abolition," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux.
Confavreux told a news conference that France had already expressed its position in a joint statement with Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany, as well as again after the Israeli parliament voted on Monday in a statement supported by all 27 EU member states, expressing "deep concern."
He added that the law contradicts democratic principles and international commitments and criticized its "discriminatory" nature.
On Monday, Israel's parliament passed a law making the death penalty the default sentence for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank found guilty of deadly attacks against Israelis.
Confavreux also said that the G7 and Gulf Cooperation Council countries will hold a meeting next week to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, in the context of the continuation of the war in the Middle East.
