Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan convened the National Security Council (NSC) this afternoon for an important meeting that began at 5:00 PM at the Presidential Complex in Ankara. The meeting comes at a time of rising tensions in the region and is expected to focus on several key national security and foreign policy issues.
Gaza in focus, concerns about the expansion of the conflict
According to Turkish media sources, the most pressing topic of discussion is the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip and the possible impact of the expansion of Israeli aggression on surrounding countries. In this context, the possibility of establishing a ceasefire in the region is expected to be examined, as well as the consequences that the conflict may have on Turkey's national security.
Ukraine and Syria, continuing priorities
The Russia-Ukraine war, now approaching its third year, is also on the agenda of the MGK. The Council will assess the regional impact of this conflict, as well as possible diplomatic steps to end the fighting. The situation in Syria will also be in focus, where efforts to ensure stability and to assess the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with the central government will be discussed.
Turkey without terrorism and operations in Iraq
Another key item on the agenda is efforts to eradicate terrorism within and outside Turkey's borders. Reports from the field on disarmament operations in northern Iraq, as well as new measures to ensure internal security, will be discussed.
Armed Forces, F-16 and national defense projects
The state of combat readiness of the Turkish Armed Forces will also be analyzed, especially against the backdrop of recent international developments. Following President Erdoğan's visit to the US, the MGK will discuss the status of the procurement of F-16 and F-35 fighter jets. Special attention will also be paid to the domestic KAAN fighter jet project and other developments in the national defense industry.
Northern Cyprus, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean
Steps to protect the rights and interests of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will also be part of the discussions, along with the security of Turkey's operations in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
New command on the table
This meeting marks a new chapter in Turkey's military leadership, as the new Chief of General Staff, General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, and the Commander of the Land Forces, General Metin Tokel, participate in a MGK meeting for the first time in their new roles.
It is expected that after the meeting ends, the Turkish Presidency will publish an official statement with the main conclusions and decisions taken by the National Security Council.
