The UK has warned of sanctions against Iran if it continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important routes for global trade.
The statement was made by British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, who accused Iran of "holding the global economy hostage" through control of this strategic strait.
About 40 countries, participating in a teleconference held under the leadership of Britain, demanded the immediate and unconditional opening of Hormuz.
"Iran is trying to hold the global economy hostage in the Strait of Hormuz. This must not be allowed. For this reason, partners today called for it to be reopened immediately and unconditionally, respecting the fundamental principles of freedom of navigation and the law of the sea," Cooper said.
According to her, the participating countries agreed to consider further pressure measures on Tehran, including economic and political measures such as sanctions, if the situation does not change.
This development comes at a time of high tensions in the region, while the blockage of this vital maritime transport artery risks having major consequences for the global economy.
