The toll from the serious rail accident in Indonesia yesterday evening is increasing, where a collision between two trains near Jakarta has caused at least 14 deaths and 84 injuries.
The incident occurred near Bekasi Timur station, about 25 kilometers east of the capital, when a stopped passenger train was hit by a long-distance train. According to authorities, all the victims were on board the hit train, while about 240 passengers on the other train were safely evacuated.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning, as emergency crews worked to extract survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident. He also visited the injured in hospital today, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and promising full transparency in the investigation. The collision is believed to have occurred at around 8:40 p.m. local time, while authorities are working to determine responsibility and the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
