Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow will do everything possible to help achieve peace in the Middle East, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Russia.
According to Russian state media, Putin told Araghchi during the meeting held on Monday in St. Petersburg:
“For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests, the interests of all the peoples of the region, so that peace can be achieved as soon as possible.”
Russia and Iran, both under severe Western sanctions, have grown increasingly close in recent years. Moscow has reportedly offered Iran diplomatic support at the UN, as well as intelligence cooperation.
Araghchi's diplomatic visit to Russia comes after recent stops in Pakistan and Oman, two countries that have acted as intermediaries between Iran and the United States.
Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Minister stated that excessive US demands led to the failure of the negotiations that took place in Islamabad.
