US President Donald Trump has said he felt no fear when he was evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner after a gunman attempted to enter the event.
"I wasn't worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world," Trump said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" the day after the incident at a Washington, DC hotel.
The incident occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where a 31-year-old man identified as Cole Thomas Allen opened fire near a security checkpoint, causing panic and the immediate intervention of law enforcement. He was arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in court.
According to US authorities, the investigation is being conducted by the FBI and the counterterrorism unit, while the motive for the attack remains under investigation. Attorney General Todd Blanche said that preliminary findings suggest that the suspect may have targeted senior White House administration officials.
At the time of the incident, Trump was at the event along with senior US government figures, including Vice President JD Vance, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt and adviser Stephen Miller.
After being immediately evacuated from the scene, the president told reporters that his job remains one of the most dangerous: "I can't imagine a more dangerous profession than this."
In a statement released on Sunday, the White House stressed that the president "remains fearless" after what it described as an assassination attempt, during which shots were fired at the event where he and members of his cabinet were attending.
