More than 27 years have passed since the end of the war in Kosovo, but the fate of over 1,600 missing persons still remains unclear.
Following the start of NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, Serbian forces intensified operations in Kosovo, committing some of the worst massacres against the Albanian civilian population. During this period, mass killings, forced evictions, and extensive destruction of settlements were reported, leaving profound humanitarian consequences and increasing the number of victims and missing persons.
According to international data, around 13,535 people were killed or disappeared during the years 1998–2000, of which over 10,000 were civilians, while 1,133 of them were children who were killed or disappeared.
