Moscow was hit today by heavy snowfall that reached 12 centimeters, breaking a record that had remained unchanged for more than half a century.
According to Mikhail Leus, a leading expert at the Russian meteorological center Phobos Weather Center, by morning a layer of snow of 12 centimeters had accumulated in the Russian capital. He noted that the previous record for this day was 10 centimeters and had stood for 55 years. His statement was published on the Max platform and reported by the RIA Novosti agency.
Snowfall began in the early hours of the morning and has severely affected several areas of the capital and the surrounding region. According to reports, the weather conditions have caused trees to fall and damage to power lines, creating difficulties in traffic and supply.
Local authorities have issued an orange alert level due to worsening snowstorms, frost and dangerous road conditions. For this reason, many parks in the city have been closed to citizens as a safety measure.
Meteorologists predict that the snowfall may weaken by the evening, but their return during Tuesday cannot be ruled out. According to forecasts, weather conditions are not expected to fully improve until Wednesday.
