After two consecutive scandals that led to the hospitalization of 116 trainees, the Security Academy has made a decision to terminate the contract with the catering company "Sori Al" and has returned cooking to its own canteen. Since June 27, food no longer comes packaged from the premises of this company, owned by Alma Tafani, the wife of businessman Nikolin Jaka, but is prepared within the institution, where it is reported that the staff of chefs has been increased and the menu has been enriched.
Although this step ends the medical emergency, the way the situation is being managed after the mass poisoning raises strong questions that require urgent answers.
The first and biggest question mark is related to the Academy's own haste to sever its relationship with the company, while legal and law enforcement institutions are still taking it very lightly. How is it possible that the Security Academy has already found the "culprit" by showing the door to the "Sori Al" company, while the Tirana Prosecutor's Office and the National Food Authority have not yet issued any final report?
If the institution itself has sufficient evidence or information that the catering company was to blame for the mass poisoning, why haven't the Prosecution and the AKU yet made an official statement? In a normal situation, if a company is found responsible for a scandal of this magnitude, logic would dictate that it should be suspended immediately and the owners be held criminally liable, rather than simply ending the story with a silent termination of the contract.
Another big cloud lies over the financial side and the fate of public money. In February 2025, the company “Sori Al” won a lucrative tender worth around 2.7 billion lek for “Food Cooking and Distribution Service” for the State Police and the Academy, with a contract that ends in 2027. Now that the service was terminated prematurely, what will happen to the billions earned? Will there be penalties and refunds for the failed service that endangered the lives of the trainees, or will everything be passed over in silence as if nothing had happened?
Beyond the walls of the Academy, this temporary silence of the control institutions carries a real risk in other institutions as well. As VNA previously reported, the activity of the company “Sori Al” was not limited to police students. The same company holds active contracts until 2027 and 2028 to provide food in sensitive institutions, such as the “Shefqet Ndroqi” University Hospital, the “Ali Mihali” Psychiatric Hospital in Vlora and the Berat Regional Hospital.
The inexplicable delays in uncovering the truth by the Tirana Prosecutor's Office, under the direction of Arens Çela, and the AKU, headed by Blerina Gjylameti, raise strong suspicions that an attempt is being made to cover up the scandal.
The facts show that the Security Academy's recent move to cook for itself has almost sealed the deal. The question that remains unanswered is, how many more poisonings must occur in the country's hospitals for our institutions to wake up and assess whether these contracts should be urgently suspended?
