The Minister of Justice, Toni Gogu, held a meeting with the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, at the Fier prison, where the latter is being held after his unexpected transfer from the Durrës detention center.
According to VNA sources, during the meeting, Gogu asked Veliaj to resign from the position of mayor of Tirana.
The meeting takes on a special political significance, not only because of the position Gogu holds, but also because of the message that was allegedly conveyed to the mayor behind bars.
Was this a personal request from the Minister of Justice, or had Toni Gogu undertaken to convey a message from Edi Rama to Veliaj?
The question becomes even stronger in the context of recent developments, when Veliaj's transfer from Durrës to Fier caused clashes within the Socialist Party itself. Just a few days ago, Bledi Çuçi demanded an account from Gogu for the transfer procedure, going so far as to demand the minister's resignation.
