Videos of intimate relationships between several Albanian artists stunned the public within a few hours. They went from one phone to another, took over WhatsApp and Telegram groups, social networks and daily conversations, turning the private lives of several public figures into the biggest spectacle of the moment.
And while there was still discussion about what had been seen, anticipation began to build for what had not yet been seen: more videos would come out. There were other names. There were politicians, too.
But now that the initial surprise effect is wearing off, the story deserves to be seen beyond the content of the videos.
These videos did not come out at just any moment. They broke while a much more serious story for the Albanian state was in the spotlight: the scandal involving the former head of SHISH, Vlora Hyseni, and the questions it raised about secrets, sensitive information, and the functioning of the institution that is supposed to protect them.
Then, almost unexpectedly, Albania went from state secrets to the bedroom secrets of some artists.
It could be a coincidence. But the chronology and especially the warnings about other publications make it necessary to follow another trail: where these videos circulated before they were made public, who might have identified them, and where the information about them might have ended up.
Because the videos didn't first appear on the day they arrived on Albanians' phones. They had previously circulated in a Telegram channel.
And this is an important detail for understanding how the monitoring of materials circulating in these spaces works.
Specialized police structures do not monitor people's private lives or every video posted on Telegram. However, channels, groups, and online spaces that emerge during investigations or that are related to the distribution of suspicious materials may be monitored by specialized units.
When a video is found during this monitoring, it may go through a verification process. It is analyzed whether the persons appearing are minors, whether there are signs of violence or exploitation, whether the material may be related to trafficking, blackmail, sexual abuse or another criminal offense. Identification of the persons and the place to which the material relates may also be requested.
And this is where the investigation should focus: on the history of these materials before their publication. Whether they have been on Telegram for a long time, whether they have been identified during foreign monitoring, and whether information about them has reached Albania.
Because only then can the question that remains behind all the spectacle of these days be answered: who knew about the existence of the videos in front of the public and why did they come out right now?
