OpenAI has announced that its artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT is now used by around 1.2 billion people each week, a figure that underlines the scale of the use of AI-powered technology.
The data was presented during DevDay 2026, OpenAI's annual developer conference in San Francisco. The company also said its platform serves about 2.5 million businesses, making the professional use sector an increasingly important component of its activity.
During the conference, OpenAI also introduced the new GPT-6.1 Sol model, which the company describes as a model that offers performance close to GPT-6 Astra, but at a significantly lower cost. According to data published by OpenAI, the standard price for using GPT-6.1 Sol is about one-fifth the price of GPT-6 Astra.
The new model is specifically geared towards complex tasks, programming, computing, and professional processes. OpenAI says that GPT-6.1 Sol aims to offer a better combination of performance, speed, and cost.
The launch of GPT-6.1 Sol comes just days after OpenAI decided not to release GPT-6.1 Astra, the model the company had planned to release to the market. Internal testing reportedly raised concerns about the model's security and how well it followed the limits set for its actions.
Meanwhile, GPT-6 Astra remains the most powerful model in OpenAI's lineup, while GPT-6.1 Sol is positioned as a lower-cost alternative for users seeking high performance in complex tasks.
As the number of users increases and usage expands in companies, OpenAI is increasingly focusing its development on artificial intelligence models and agents that can perform more complex tasks in an automated manner.
