While in Pakistan, Vice President JD Vance was announcing that negotiations with Iran had failed, US President Donald Trump was in Miami attending a UFC (mixed martial arts) match.
Trump spent several hours in the stands near the fighting cage, surrounded by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, some of his children, UFC officials and prominent public figures. According to the New York Times, the president appeared mostly calm, watching the matches as aides gave him occasional updates on the situation.
It's not clear whether Trump was informed of the failure of the negotiations when he entered the arena. He was not using his phone during the event, and at one point Rubio approached him to show him something on his screen.
Earlier, during a trip to Florida, Trump told reporters that it didn't matter whether or not a deal was reached with Iran.
“We win, regardless of the outcome,” he said. “We have defeated them militarily.”
Meanwhile, in Washington, the political situation for the president remains tense. Democrats and some of his critics have reacted sharply to Trump's recent statements on Iran, even calling for the initiation of impeachment proceedings and a full mental examination.
While these debates are taking place in the capital, Trump spent the evening in Miami, where he was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd at the UFC arena. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, JD Vance walked out of the talks without a deal, and it remains unclear whether the fragile ceasefire with Tehran will last.
