US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Canada, accusing Ottawa of imposing high tariffs on American products and repeating criticism of relations between the two countries.
"Canada wants the benefits of being a country, without being one," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
The US president also accused Canada of imposing high tariffs on US agricultural products for years. "They have also been charging our great farmers, for many years, huge amounts of tariffs. No more," Trump wrote.
His statements come at a time when trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa continue to strain bilateral relations.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously accused the US administration of using the new tariffs to "harm and divide" Canada. He has called the measures "a miscalculation" and has warned of retaliatory measures of the same amount, starting September 8.
Carney also announced that Canada has suspended trade negotiations with Washington after the US made demands that Ottawa could not accept.
On the other hand, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Canada had withdrawn from a nearly completed agreement, which would have further reduced tariffs on Canadian exports to the US market.
