A proposal reported by international media has opened debate about a possible radical change in the way European football competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, are broadcast.
According to reports, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has proposed making these competitions accessible for free to fans around the world, through a new digital model funded by advertising.
The idea comes at a time when the Madrid club is preparing for early leadership elections, which could also affect the future of its projects.
According to Spanish media, the plan envisages the creation of a new free-to-air broadcasting platform, while the negotiations also mention the possibility of an agreement with UEFA to review the current television model.
However, some sources in the sector have described this idea as difficult to implement, partly calling it a "political promise" in the context of developments within the club.
Meanwhile, currently the broadcast of European competitions in some markets is linked to paid platforms, while in the United Kingdom this year the finals will not be accessible for free as before, but only for subscribers of the respective platforms.
Current television rights contracts are expected to change from the 2027-28 season, when several new platforms will also take over broadcasting of UEFA's main competitions.
