Today, March 22, Bektashi believers around the world celebrate Sultan Novruz, one of the most important holidays of this faith, also known as the "New Day" and as the birthday of Imam Ali.
This holiday has ancient roots in Persia, where it symbolized the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new solar year, a moment when day begins to prevail over night. Over time, it was embraced by the Bektashi faith, taking on a new spiritual and religious dimension.
Sultan Novruz represents the rebirth of nature and life. Trees bloom, vegetation comes to life, and nature awakens from winter, making this holiday a symbol of hope, renewal, and new beginnings.
In Albania, this holiday dates back to the 14th century, with the spread of Bektashism, and continues to preserve its traditions to this day. Believers mark this day with various rituals, ranging from taking care of personal hygiene, placing flowering branches on the doorstep of the house as a good omen, to prayers and visits to the tekke.
Traditional foods also have a special importance in this holiday. Dishes such as ashurja, chicken or lamb stew, sultiashi and kabunia are not missing from the table. A special tradition is the preparation of a pie with 12 types of herbs, in which a coin is also placed; whoever finds it is considered lucky for the coming year.
Also, in some areas, the custom of rolling a cake, which children roll in wheat fields to bring prosperity and abundance to the family, is preserved.
During this day, believers exchange visits, with the youngest respecting tradition by visiting the oldest. Another important symbolism is the distribution of milk and sherbet in the morning, which represent the purification of the body and soul.
Sultan Novruz lasts three days and, in addition to its religious dimension, remains a celebration that unites people, promotes solidarity and care for each other, carrying a strong message of peace and harmony.
