Croatian authorities have stopped a shipment of peaches exported from Albania at the border after laboratory tests showed high nickel content. The news was confirmed on the official website of the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for Food (RASFF), where the case was registered on 21 August 2025.
According to the announcement published by RASFF, the fruits contained exceeded levels of nickel and pose a potential risk to the health of consumers. The name of the Albanian company that carried out the export has not yet been disclosed.
This is the second time this year that Croatia has rejected a food shipment from Albania due to food safety concerns. Earlier, on March 12, 2025, Croatian authorities stopped a shipment of peppers, also from Albania, which contained high levels of the pesticide flonicamid – a substance with high potential for toxicity to health, especially to the liver and kidneys.
The shipment of peppers was classified by RASFF as posing a serious risk, due to high concentrations of this insecticide, which is commonly used to combat pests in agriculture and has a high solubility in water.
