Syria has officially become the latest country to recognize the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kosovo. The news was announced today by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, who during a joint press conference appeared alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, whom she thanked for mediating in reaching this historic agreement.
"This is an important step for strengthening Kosovo's international position and expanding our strategic friendships in the Middle East," Osmani declared, emphasizing that the recognition by Syria is the result of a long diplomatic process and the support of international partners.
However, the news has caused strong reactions in Serbia, where Belgrade media have described the decision as a “diplomatic scandal.” Serbian portal “B92” opened its edition with the headline “Scandal, Syria recognizes Kosovo,” reporting that the recognition constitutes a “blow to the traditionally friendly relations” between Serbia and Syria, which date back to the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad.
So far, the Serbian government has not given an official reaction, but diplomatic sources in Belgrade have signaled that a statement from the Foreign Ministry is expected in the coming hours. Serbia has maintained close relations with Syria over the past decades, especially during the period of international isolation of both countries.
On the other hand, Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, welcomed Damascus' decision, stating that Syria's recognition of Kosovo's independence "opens a new chapter in the country's international relations."
"As of today, a new path of political, economic and cultural cooperation opens between Kosovo and Syria. This is a moment that strengthens our aspirations for membership in international organizations and for increasing our global influence," Kurti said in a statement to the media.
Syria is the third country to recognize Kosovo's independence in 2025, after Kenya and Sudan, bringing the total number of international recognitions of Kosovo to a significant increase this year.
