Protests in Serbia, clashes with police again; injuries reported

Anti-government protests in Serbia continued on Friday night in several Serbian cities. Incidents were reported during the protests.

In central Belgrade, army forces clashed with anti-government demonstrators, while clashes also occurred on King Alexander Boulevard.

Protesters threw fireworks and set fire to containers. Police responded with tear gas and dispersed the demonstrators with armored vehicles.

There are reports of injuries during the protests.

In Novi Sad, the protest officially ended around 10:30 PM and the rally passed off peacefully.

The anti-government protests were organized in response to attacks by supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) on opponents of the government in two cities in Vojvodina – Vrbas and Bačka Palanka – on August 12.

In the protests organized in recent days, there have been violent clashes between anti-government demonstrators and SNS activists, who have hit the protesters with pyrotechnic devices.

Student-led anti-government protests have been ongoing in Serbia for more than nine months. Protesters are demanding that authorities be held accountable for the deaths of 16 people when a concrete shelter collapsed at the Novi Sad train station on November 1, 2024.

The Serbian government denies responsibility for the accident and refuses to call early elections, one of the latest demands of the organizers of the mass protests. /Rel
