The Secretary of the Tirana Municipal Council, Behar Zheheli, has responded with an official letter to the request of Mayor Erion Veliaj, informing him that there is no decision prohibiting him from participating in the Council meeting.
The official document, dated September 22, 2025, states that Veliaj's request "to be recognized, heard, defended and provided explanations" at the meeting on September 23, at 4:00 PM, is legitimate and that the Municipal Council has not taken any measures to prevent his presence.
However, Secretary Zheheli adds that, in the event of inability to be physically present at the meeting, Veliaj may send his remarks and positions in writing, which will be administered and become part of the decision-making process.
This Municipal Council meeting is expected to take place this afternoon, where the main item on the agenda is the discussion and decision-making on the dismissal of Erion Veliaj from the position of Mayor of Tirana.
We recall that today the Committee on Legal Affairs and Social Justice rejected Veliaj's request to be present, with the votes of the socialist majority and several other councilors, while the opposition argued that the mayor should be recognized for his constitutional right to be heard before the final decision. Sources indicate that SPAK has also not given authorization for his participation.
