Sali Berisha did not deny that there may be voices within the Democratic Party calling for his removal. In a press conference, he responded to yesterday's statement by Besart Xhaferraj, who said that if Berisha does not guarantee the rerun of the May 11 elections, he should step down from the party leadership.
But Berisha stressed that any free vote within the DP must refer to the party's statute and the fact that the elections were manipulated.
According to him, it will be the membership and he himself who will give the final interpretation of the statute, implying that any voice against it will be seen as part of a "vocal chorus", which will be labeled as a "hostile group", just like anyone who has dared to have a different opinion in these 30 years.
"I guarantee you that every MP, member or supporter of this party will be free to express any opinion they have. This is the most normal thing. Of course, the interpretation of the article of the statute must be correct. The statute speaks of elections and not of farces. And now, to close this issue, it will be the membership of the DP that will make the final interpretation," said Berisha.
The chief democrat also spoke about the departures of several DP figures to the state administration, the latest of which was former MP Zheni Gjergji, who was appointed director of the Elbasan Hospital yesterday.
Regarding this, Berisha said that all those who "violate" the trust of the Democrats are outside the Democratic Party. According to him, there are not many who have crossed over to the other side, but only 3-4 people in total.
"We are dealing with individuals who voted and supported the Democrats. I can say one thing: for Sali Berisha, all those who trample on that trust and support are automatically outside this political force. Because 99.9% of those who supported these individuals are already unemployed, are in difficult conditions, but they are not for sale. They have served the cause, while these few people - only 3-4 in total - have made a choice: they have joined the party of crime, the party that belongs to them, and that's it," Berisha declared.
