Sali Berisha chose a Facebook communication with citizens to proclaim the Democratic Party as the most democratic force in Albania, even claiming that it challenges its sister parties in Europe.
"The Democratic Party has the fairest competition and the most democratic form of competition that can exist," he said, emphasizing that unlike many European parties where leaders are elected by forums, in the DP the membership decides.
Berisha urged the Democrats not to fall “victims of propaganda,” accusing opponents of having eliminated free voting since 2009 and even mobilizing “the most dangerous cocaine mafia” against the DP. According to him, the race is open to anyone who meets the criteria and constitutes the most important moment for representing the membership.
Beyond this description of an ideal process, the reality is actually quite different. Because in this "most basic form of democracy", so far only one candidate remains in the race for the presidency of the DP: Sali Berisha himself.
And so, amidst talk of competition and openness, the DP is conducting perhaps its clearest race ever — a process where the outcome does not wait for the vote to be confirmed.
