Mereme Sela, candidate for president of the Democratic Party, has publicly denounced the electoral process in the party, describing it as manipulated and in violation of the statute.
In a press statement, Sela announced that he will address the Tirana Court to suspend the process and SPAK to investigate what he calls a "corrupt electoral process."
She accuses Sali Berisha of holding the Democratic Party hostage and not allowing free and fair elections. According to Sela, the former president does not meet the criteria of the statute to run, as he lost the 2025 elections and is not legally allowed to run again.
Sela also emphasizes that the Democratic Party cannot come to power with a leader declared "non grata" in the US and the United Kingdom.
She adds that the disqualification of her and other candidates is unfair and constitutes a blow to democracy within the party, while she says she received notification of this decision through the media.
Sela warns that she will also address the US Embassy, the British Embassy, and the EU mission to seek support and to inform about the situation in the party, while expressing skepticism about a reaction from the DP structures.
