The German Ambassador to Tirana, Karl Bergner, has reacted after the opening of the competition today to elect the new head of SPAK. In a post on social networks, the German ambassador praises the work of Altin Dumani and states that under his leadership, SPAK has made extraordinary contributions to the fight against corruption and organized crime in Albania, which is also shown by the trust of citizens and international partners.
"In recent years, under the leadership of Altin Dumani, SPAK has made extraordinary contributions to the fight against corruption and organized crime in Albania. The great trust of the Albanian population and Albania's international partners in SPAK's work impressively underlines this."
He calls for a transparent process, based on merit and free from external influence. According to the German ambassador, the independence of the judiciary is a key criterion for Germany regarding the rule of law and for Albania's membership in the EU.
"The process launched today by the High Prosecutorial Council to select the next head of SPAK must be transparent, based on merit and free from external influence.
"The independence of the judiciary, which must be demonstrated in the process launched today, but also in the daily actions of the executive and legislative bodies, is a key criterion for Germany regarding the rule of law and the level of Albania's preparation for EU membership."
The High Prosecutorial Council opened the competition today for the new head of SPAK, the successor to Altin Dumani. With 11 votes in favor, in a meeting that was also attended by representatives of the American embassy, it announced the vacancy and has 21 days for applicants.
