When Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley Stadium on July 30, 1966, no one would have thought that England would wait another 60 years for another world title.
The wait was extended again at the 2026 World Cup, as Thomas Tuchel's team were knocked out in the semi-finals by Argentina. England took the lead early, but conceded two goals in the dying minutes and were defeated 2-1, missing another chance to bring the trophy home.
According to an analysis published by the BBC, England's World Cup history since 1966 has been filled with disappointments, records and missed opportunities.
Since the historic triumph, 454 players have made their debut for England, while 161 different players have represented the country at the World Cup. Also, a full 15 managers have tried to repeat Alf Ramsey's success, including names such as Bobby Robson, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Fabio Capello, Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel, but without succeeding in winning the trophy.
England's eliminations have made football history. From the 1970 defeat to West Germany, to Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" in 1986, David Beckham's red card against Argentina in 1998, Frank Lampard's disallowed goal in 2010, Harry Kane's missed penalty against France in 2022 and the dramatic upset by Argentina in the 2026 World Cup.
Germany and Argentina remain the rivals who have caused England the most World Cup eliminations, three times each, while penalties continue to be considered one of the Three Lions' biggest nightmares.
Meanwhile, during these six decades, entire generations have changed. Britain has had 14 prime ministers, the US 11 presidents, Queen Elizabeth II has been succeeded by King Charles III, man has landed on the moon, the Berlin Wall has fallen, the internet has been invented, and smartphones have transformed everyday life.
However, one thing remains unchanged: Bobby Moore remains the only England captain to have lifted the World Cup.
Although disappointments have been repeated, England continues to produce top-level footballers and believes that one day the long wait will end.
