A series of road accidents that have occurred in recent hours in several cities across the country have resulted in serious consequences, with casualties and injuries, bringing the issue of road safety back into focus.
In Tirana, a serious accident was recorded a few minutes ago on “Ibrahim Rugova” street, near the area known as Libri Universitari. According to preliminary data, a white “Benz” vehicle drove onto the sidewalk, injuring a passerby and causing panic among the surrounding residents. Police forces have arrived at the scene, while the driver of the vehicle has been identified and is being questioned about the circumstances of the incident.
Also in Tirana, another fatal accident occurred this morning in the Kombinat area. A 61-year-old man, with the initials YD, lost his life after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck. The truck driver has been taken to the police station, while the investigation team continues to work to fully clarify the causes.
A day earlier, an accident was also reported on the Kavajë-Rrogozhinë road, near the Gosa overpass. A pedestrian lost his life after being hit by a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man. The latter was escorted by the police.
Also 4 days ago, a fatal accident was recorded in Kukës, on the Bicaj-Kukës road. According to the police, a 56-year-old man hit a 64-year-old pedestrian, who died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was taken to the police station.
Also on April 18, another fatal accident occurred on the Milot-Rrëshen road, near the town of Burrelt. A pedestrian, aged around 70, lost his life after being hit by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
These consecutive accidents show that the safety of citizens on the road is fragile and a reflection of a problem that has long been in need of a solution. Meanwhile, institutions seem to react more after tragedies than before them, and victims are not just reduced to statistics in political statements. Safety is often mentioned as an achievement, but on the roads citizens pay for it every day with fear and, in the most serious cases, with their lives.
