An Iranian military spokesman has stated that Tehran will not change its stance on controlling the Strait of Hormuz, despite efforts by the United States to guarantee the free passage of ships in this strategic maritime area.
"The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened through war, aggression or American violations," the Iranian spokesman told state television, stressing that respecting Iran's rights is, according to him, the only condition for resolving the situation.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated after attacks on tankers in the globally important waterway, as the two sides clash for influence and control over it. US President Donald Trump declared that the US would act as the “guardian of the Strait of Hormuz” and protect ships from Iranian attacks, in exchange for a fee for the service.
