Iran has issued a new warning to Bulgaria after Sofia allowed the United States to use its military bases, increasing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
In a statement published on social media, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that Bulgarian authorities must be held accountable for the decision to allow a US refueling plane to operate from the country's military bases. According to Tehran, this is not an isolated case, but a continuous support for US military operations against Iran.
However, Iranian diplomacy emphasized that the Iranian people have never had any disagreements with the Bulgarian people and that relations between the two countries have traditionally been based on mutual respect.
The warning comes just days after US President Donald Trump publicly thanked Bulgaria for its support for the US military presence, stating that the country stands by the US despite threats from Iran.
Meanwhile, Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov downplayed the risk of an Iranian attack, stating that he does not believe Bulgaria is in direct danger, although he acknowledged that "anything is possible."
Recently, the Bulgarian parliament approved the relocation of US military aircraft to the Bezmer air base, a decision that has sparked protests from local residents, who fear that the US military presence could turn the region into a potential target in the event of an escalation of the conflict.
