With the end of the three-year term of the current president, Sokol Sadushi, approaching, the Supreme Court has officially launched the process to select its next leader. The procedure was opened exactly 60 days before the end of the official term.
Sadushi, who took over the leadership of this institution on October 17, 2023, will officially conclude his term as president on October 17, 2026. All interested judges who intend to take over the leadership of the judicial pyramid have until September 11, 2026 to submit their written request to the institution, along with their visionary platform for the management of the Supreme Court.
The continuation of the competition will be based on the regulation approved by the High Judicial Council since 2023. The selection procedure is organized through the General Meeting of judges of this court, where the winner will be determined by secret ballot among the members themselves.
The legislation on the status of judges and prosecutors stipulates that the term of office of the head of the Supreme Court lasts three years and does not provide for the right to consecutive re-election. To avoid any institutional vacuum or interruption in its functioning, the new president will officially take office on October 18, 2026.
As for Sokol Sadushi, the end of his leadership role does not mark his departure from the Supreme Court. He will continue to serve as a member of it until 2029, as he was decreed as a judge in 2020 with a constitutional mandate of 9 years.
