A journalist and candidate in the October 4 regional elections was killed on Saturday in the city of Caraz, Peru, while visiting a market with her supporters.
The victim is 44-year-old Susi Aponte, a candidate in the Ancas district. She ran the news website "China Polo Dominical", where she published reports on irregularities and allegations of corruption within the police ranks.
Aponte was shot dead while walking through the market with her supporters. Five other people were also injured in the attack.
Peruvian police have arrested a suspect in the incident, a Venezuelan citizen, while investigations continue to fully clarify the circumstances and motive of the attack.
Just days before the murder, Aponte had announced on social media that she was receiving threats from inside prison. The journalist had expressed concern for her safety, and authorities are now investigating whether the previous threats are related to the assassination.
The Peruvian Press Council has called for a full investigation into the murder, raising concerns about cases of violence against journalists and the fact that some of them have remained unsolved.
According to local police data, four Peruvian journalists have been killed over the past year.
