A NORAD F-16 fighter jet intercepted a general aviation aircraft Saturday morning that had entered restricted airspace over Thurmont, Maryland, near Camp David, where President Donald Trump was staying for the weekend.
According to a statement from First Air Force, part of the US Northern Command, the incident occurred at around 07:50 in the morning. During the intervention, the fighter jet used flares to attract the pilot's attention and communicate with him. NORAD explained that flares are used with high safety measures, burn quickly and do not pose a risk to people on the ground.
The civilian aircraft was escorted out of the restricted area without further incident. US authorities reminded pilots of their obligation to check NOTAMs before departure, so that they are informed of temporary flight restrictions.
There is a permanent no-fly zone over Camp David, and restrictions are extended when the president is at the presidential residence. Trump arrived at Camp David on Friday evening and is expected to stay there through the weekend.
