On Monday, US Vice President JD Vance held a tense phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Axios reported. In the call, Vance sharply criticized Netanyahu, accusing him of pitching President Donald Trump the idea of an “easy” war against Iran.
Sources say Vance has questioned Netanyahu’s presentation of Iranian regime change, making it seem more feasible than it actually was. A U.S. official described the situation using the nickname “Bibi” for Netanyahu and said Vance had a more accurate view of some of these claims.
After the call, several US sources said Israel was trying to undermine Vance, who has a key role in negotiating a ceasefire with Iran. Vance, known for his stance against engaging in protracted wars, is working alongside negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to reach a deal.
A US official said that reports that Iran will negotiate directly with Vance could be an Israeli strategy, as they see him as more flexible in securing a deal. However, the outlet notes that there is no concrete evidence to support this claim.
According to another American source, Vance is seen as the key figure who could reach a deal with Iran. “If the Iranians don’t negotiate with Vance, they won’t reach a deal with anyone else,” the official said, describing him as the best possible option.
