US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in France for a meeting of Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers, after Donald Trump criticized NATO countries for their reluctance or refusal to get involved in the war against Iran.
Asked by reporters about the reception he expects to receive at this meeting, Rubio said before leaving that he expects to have good talks with his counterparts.
"I'm not there to make them happy. I have good relationships with everyone on a personal level, and we work with their governments very carefully. But the people I want to make happy are the citizens of the United States. I work for them. I don't work for France, Germany or Japan," he said.
Rubio left Washington for the G7 meeting just hours after Trump sharply criticized NATO countries that, according to him, are not doing enough to support the US and Israel in attacks on Iran.
"Frankly, I think countries around the world, even those that complain a little bit about this situation, should be grateful that the United States has a president willing to confront such a threat," Rubio said during a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
