Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in good health and continues to lead the country, despite his absence from public appearances, which officials say is related to security reasons.
The statement was made on Friday by Ali Bahreini, Iran's representative to the United Nations office in Geneva. He stressed that the leader's absence from public life is a result of "increased security measures due to the current special circumstances."
"He is completely healthy and continues to lead the country," Bahraini said, according to Iranian state media.
Public absence after Khamenei's assassination
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since last month, when his father and former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes. Since then, he has communicated only through written statements.
Reports of minor injuries
Earlier this month, sources close to the situation reported that the 56-year-old leader had suffered a broken leg and other minor injuries on the first day of the US and Israeli bombing campaign.
According to the same sources, in addition to the leg injury, he also suffered a bruise around his left eye and minor scratches on his face.
However, Iranian authorities insist that his health is good and that he continues to exercise his functions as the country's leader normally.
