NATO military leaders are expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss Ukraine and next steps, US and NATO officials said on Tuesday.
Washington and European capitals are working to determine what security guarantees for Kiev might look like.
Ukraine and its European allies were encouraged by US President Donald Trump's promise of security guarantees to help end Russia's war in Ukraine during a meeting in Washington on Monday, but they face many unanswered questions.
As military planners began work on finding possible options for security guarantees, Trump ruled out sending US troops to Ukraine, but suggested that Washington could offer some form of air support.
US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, who also oversees all NATO operations in Europe, will brief defense chiefs on the results of last week's meeting in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chairman of NATO's military committee, said a video conference would take place on Wednesday.
“As diplomatic efforts to secure peace in Ukraine progress, I look forward to [Grynkewich’s] update on the current security situation,” Dragone wrote in X.
Officials emphasized that the meeting is taking place under special circumstances and it is expected that topics such as security guarantees will be at the center of the discussion.
A US official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that US General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to attend the meeting, but plans could change.
The British government said the so-called "Coalition of the Willing", which met virtually on Tuesday, agreed that their planning teams would meet with their American counterparts in the coming days to advance plans on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump again ruled out the possibility of deploying US troops on Ukrainian soil and did not elaborate on the security guarantees he has previously mentioned that Washington could offer Kiev as part of any post-war deal.
But, in the same Fox News interview, Trump suggested that Washington could provide air support to Ukraine.
“When it comes to security, [the Europeans] are willing to put people on the ground, we are willing to help them with things, especially, perhaps, if we talk about air support because nobody has what we have, they really don’t,” Trump said. He gave no further details.
REL
