Major American media outlets, including the New York Times and Fox News, are reporting that US President Donald Trump's legal team has sent an official letter to the BBC, warning it of a possible $1 billion lawsuit.
The letter signed by Trump's lawyers says the BBC "slandered and manipulated" the public with the Panorama documentary, in which two parts of a 2021 speech were edited to create the impression that Trump had instigated the attack on the Capitol.
According to American media, the BBC has been given until November 14 to make a "full and fair retraction" of the documentary, otherwise it will face legal proceedings for "serious damage to President Trump's reputation."
The letter comes a few days after the resignation of BBC director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness, who took responsibility for "editorial errors" in the making of the documentary.
