US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his desire for the US to have control over Greenland, after announcing plans to appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to the island, Bloomberg reports.
"We need it for national security," Trump told reporters Monday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Trump has pushed for Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, to become part of the United States, citing its strategic importance and mineral resources. Landry, who took office as governor in January 2024, publicly supports the idea.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen earlier declared in a joint statement that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.
"You can't annex another country. Not even with the argument of international security," they said.
