The US State Department announced on Saturday that there are "credible reports" of a Hamas plan to carry out an imminent attack on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, which would seriously violate the ceasefire agreement, the BBC reports.
In an official statement, the US said such an attack would constitute a "grave and direct violation of the ceasefire" and would undermine the progress achieved through mediation efforts.
The State Department did not provide further details about the nature of the attack or the source of the information.
Currently, the first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is being implemented, with all live hostages being released, while the bodies of the killed hostages are being returned to Israel. As part of the agreement, Israel has released 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza.
The US has also informed the other guarantors of the agreement, including Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, demanding that Hamas respect its commitments.
"If Hamas undertakes this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and maintain the integrity of the ceasefire," the statement said.
While Hamas has not yet reacted, US President Donald Trump previously warned on the Truth Social platform that if Hamas continues to attack civilians in Gaza, the US will intervene, however he clarified that he would not send US troops to Gaza.
