The White House gives a strange answer to a simple question asked by a HuffPost reporter
A common question about the choice of location for President Donald Trump to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin has prompted an unusual reaction from White House spokespeople.
After Trump announced yet another meeting with Putin — this time in Budapest — HuffPost reached out to key White House spokespeople with a simple question: Why Budapest?
It is worth remembering that the Hungarian capital was the place where the Budapest Memorandum was signed in 1994, through which Ukraine gave up thousands of nuclear weapons inherited after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in exchange for guarantees that Russia would respect its territorial integrity.
Putin broke this promise in 2014 with the invasion and annexation of Crimea, with the military offensive in Donbas for more than a decade, and then with the full invasion in 2022. He continues to kill Ukrainian civilians today with regular drone and missile attacks.
Given this history, HuffPost asked the White House: Who chose Budapest?
White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt responded after a few minutes: "Your mom."
After a minute, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung added an even shorter response: “Mom.”
When HuffPost asked Leavitt if she considered her response a joke, she responded again:
"I find it ridiculous that you consider yourself a journalist. You are a far-left activist that no one takes seriously, including your colleagues in the media – they just don't say it to my face. Stop sending me fake, biased, and stupid questions."
HuffPost ironically stated that he is "devastated" and is now afraid to ask any more questions, much less respond in the "I'm the rubber, you're the glue" style.
