According to reports, the withdrawal of about 5,000 US troops from Germany would restore the US military presence in this country to levels before the increase in forces following the launch of the Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2022.
According to Department of Defense data, as of last December, there were about 36,436 US troops in Germany, making it the second-largest US military presence in the world, after Japan.
The Pentagon has not said whether these forces will return to the United States or be relocated to other regions. Meanwhile, the deployment of a battalion with advanced long-range missile capabilities has also been canceled, a development that would significantly reduce Germany's defense capabilities in this area.
In 2022, former President Joe Biden had approved sending 7,000 additional troops to Germany, just days after the start of the war in Ukraine, as part of strengthening NATO's eastern flank.
The US military presence in Germany has historically been much larger, peaking during the Cold War with around 250,000 troops stationed in West Germany.
In addition to Germany, a significant number of US troops are also located in Italy, with over 12,000 troops, and in the United Kingdom, with over 10,000. Around 4,000 troops are stationed in Spain, although it has been reported that the US administration has raised concerns about the use of bases there in various international contexts.
US military bases in Europe continue to play a key role not only in the security of the continent, but also in operations in the Middle East. Among the most important facilities are Ramstein Air Base in Germany, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in the UK, Aviano in Italy, and Lajes Field in the Azores, Portugal.
Also, the headquarters of the US European Command and the US Africa Command are located in Stuttgart, Germany, while in Italy, important naval facilities operate in Naples and Sigonella.
