Spirit Airlines has announced the closure of its operations, after the American airline failed to secure a $500 million bailout package from the Donald Trump administration.
The low-cost airline had been in negotiations with the US government for a financial deal that would save it from bankruptcy, but according to the company, the increase in jet fuel prices has severely affected its financial situation. This increase, it said, is related to tensions and war in the Middle East between the United States and Iran, in collaboration with Israel.
"It is with great disappointment that we announce that we have begun an orderly reduction of our operations, effective immediately," the company said in a statement.
Spirit Airlines has canceled all flights and asked customers not to show up at airports, stressing that the shutdown process is being carried out in an orderly manner.
Company executives stated that the significant increase in fuel prices since the beginning of the conflict has made it impossible to continue operations, leaving the company with no alternatives.
Spirit Airlines, founded in 1992, was known for its low-cost flights and yellow planes, employing about 11,000 people. The company had filed for bankruptcy twice in 2025.
