The Pentagon has been preparing plans for weeks for the possibility of ground operations in Iran, in case Donald Trump decides to escalate the situation.
The news is reported by The Washington Post, which cites sources familiar with discussions within the US administration. According to them, these are limited military scenarios and not a full-scale invasion.
Sources say that the options being considered mainly include special forces incursions and the engagement of infantry troops for targeted operations, rather than a massive ground intervention.
On the other hand, the White House has emphasized that preparing such scenarios is part of standard procedures. Spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt stated that the Pentagon's job is to provide all possible options to the commander in chief.
"This does not mean that the president has made a decision," she said, leaving open the possibility that the situation remains in the strategic assessment phase.
The developments come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with any decision to escalate expected to have a far-reaching impact on international stability.
